What Is a Doula?

is a Greek word meaning “a woman who serves” that has now come to describe a trained and experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her husband continuous emotional support, physical comfort, and assistance in obtaining information before, during, and just after childbirth.

The acceptance of doulas in maternity care is growing rapidly with the recognition of their important contribution to the improved physical outcomes and emotional wellbeing of mothers and infants.– DONA International

Benefits of Hiring a Doula

The responsibilities of a doula can be wide-ranging, and will vary from pregnancy to pregnancy. I’m here to help you wherever you need it most. That said, here are some reasons women find it helpful to retain a doula’s services:

Informed decisions are the best decisions, and many women are often surprised to find out just how many options are available to them in labor and delivery.
Putting a birth plan together. Breathing techniques. Helpful massages and exercises. I will walk you through what you need to do before the big day to show up prepared.
Labor Support
Working with your birth partner or one on one, I will offer advice, encouragement, and empathy. Professional training aside, I’ve had four kids myself!
We will talk through what your needs and wants are for your birth. On delivery day I will be in your corner to boost your confidence and ensure that your voice is the one that’s heard the loudest.
Pain Management
I’m trained to help women relieve the discomfort of labor. Whether you are determined to have your baby without pain medication or not, I can help you try different positions and techniques to alleviate pain and make your birth easier.
